Local Business Coast Hwy Traders is Turning 21!

An Iconic Downtown Business Celebrates 21 Years.

Local business Coast Hwy Traders Supports local Artists/Fair Trade

Coast hwy Traders

Coast Hwy Traders is thrilled to be celebrating their 21 first birthday on Saturday, October 22 2016 at noon. We will be celebrating with Mexican Food, Music and door prizes.

Coast Hwy Traders was founded in October 1996 by owner Beverly Goodman as a venue for local artists, fun imports, and unique items. Coast Hwy Traders supports Fair trade buying and they support local charities like an orphanage in Mexico and a children’s foundation in Nepal.

Owner Beverly Goodman has been traveling to Mexico for over twenty years meeting local artists and importing their goods. She first met Moises Rodriquez when he was a young father with two small children. He was living and working in a small village outside TONALA,Mexico. Moises family counted on Bev’s visits to help support him and his family. Moises is now a well known artist. Buying from him was easy as his work is beautiful. Today his children are grown and married. Their room is now a gallery for his art. This is a story repeated many times by the unique art at Coast Hwy Traders.

Coast Hwy Traders also has the largest collection of Day of the Dead merchandise in Southern California.

Mexican Folk Art

skeleton plateDay of the Dead (skeleton plate)

With the iconic Folk Tree Import store closing this month, their is one less store to buy unique authentic Mexican Folk Art. It is also a loss for all the artists Rocky (the owner) bought from. Coast Hwy Traders will do our best to take up the slack. We certainly have wonderful authentic pieces from Mexican artists. Many of which are one kind items. We are always happy to E-mail you pictures so you can shop from afar.

Just tell us what you are looking for!

Importing from Mexico

Shopping in TONALA today

People often come in with items they bought on a trip and want to import. Well my items from my last trip are still in TJ where they have been for four weeks. What makes delays. Well there is a lot of paperwork to do. You have to have receipts for everything you buy. So all those fun one of a kind items I buy at the market in Tonala they need their own receipt. All this information then goes to a broker.

My conversation today with broker….Broker, “we need a copy of your signature.” Okay.

Second call, “You signed your name, we need it printed too”…and so it goes.

The good news is that the items will arrive this week.

A Magical Town….Guanajuato, Mexico

mexico blog 3Guanajuato

Everyone knows about San Miguel De Allende. Everyone is always like I want to go there. San Miguel is a beautiful town but it is very Americanized. You are hard pressed to hear any Spanish in the restaurants. Only 45 minutes from San Miguel is Guanajuato.

mexico blog

Guanajuato is a magical town. Very European in flavor. It sits high up on a hill with a maze of traffic tunnels underneath. We ate at two superb restaurants there. Actually we ate at both of them twice. There are many museums in Guanajuato. The Diego Rivera, The Don Quixote, The Mummies Museum, and The National Museum. There are wonderful sculptures on many streets. The University is there too. Near PiPila (pronounced peepee la ) is a fabulous bed & breakfast called Casa Zuniga…full of art…great city views …delicious breakfast.

With the new TJ tunnel you can fly on Volaris from TJ to Leon. Guanajuato is just 20 minutes away!

I started at the gift show in Enart Tlaquepaque then off to San Miguel and then to Guanajuanto.

Here are some random photos in San Miguel.

Random San Miguel today!

Hello San Miguel

If you are ever going to San Miguel, make sure you add two or three nights in Guanajuato. It is an easy bus ride. A wonderful city!! It is so European. To me Guanajuato is much more interesting than San Miguel.

I Love My Rain Barrels!!

rain barrel blog

In Southern California we always have a water shortage. Last year I decided to install rain barrels. Rain barrels hook up to your gutter and capture the rain. Once I started looking I was so happy to find some Mexican ones that go with my house. This style had an added bonus of being able to plant on top. These succulents have really grown since this summer! I found these rain barrels on Hayneedle.

Tree of Life Collection

tree of life blog 2Tree of life

I fell in love with Mexican Trees of Life during my first trip to Mexico. I have quite a collection of over 60! Trees of Life have been around a long time. Originally they were used at ceremonial celebrations as incense burners. Later they made them as Adam and Eve and used them in churches and to teach the bible. They were often given to newlyweds to wish them a good harvest. 90% of mine are from Izucar de Matamoros. One of my favorites is the one depicting all the costumes of the different states in Mexico.

Keep Encinitas Cool..Shop Downtown Encinitas

old_encinitas_front

December started out so slow we were really worried, but by the end of the month you all came out in droves. Coast Hwy Traders will be twenty years old this October 2016. Expect a big store wide sale and party! We will keep you posted on the date and information.

For those who do not know, I am on the Encinitas 101 Mainstreet Board. We are doing our best to keep small independent retailers Downtown. We have been losing businesses due to high rent increases. We are trying to keep ahead and find new retailers. Let me know if you know anyone.

As always shop local. Keep Encinitas cool.!!

Decoupage Mexican Style Light Switch Plates

 lightswitch 2

Light switch covers can be so boring. Why not decoupage them? Go to Michaels and buy glossy decoupage. Find some fun paper that matches your house style. Take the switch plate covers off. Save the screws, better yet paint them a matching color. Cut up your paper to cover the switch. Do not forget to do the edges. I did the multi talavera tile one and my niece did blue talavera one.

Do not forget I happy to do workshops if I get 8 people. Most are just twenty dollars each. We can do an Altar box workshop, Light cover workshop, or Sugar skull workshop. Basic supplies are always provided. Just email me at mexart@cox.net or phone me at 760-944-1381
