The Pink Lady of Malibu Canyon

The Pink Lady of Malibu Canyon appeared on October 29, 1966. The pink lady was 60 feet tall and she was painted on the cliff above the Los Angels, California highway over night. The pink lady attracted crowds and fans from all over. It took a week and tons of paint to cover her up.

The Pink Lady was painted by Lynne Seemayer. She was a 31 year old paralegal and an artist. Seemayer, after the dust settled about her Pink Lady became a well known artist in the Los Angeles area.

Local artist Alan Casagrande has created this beautiful painting (see above) depicting the Pink Lady of Malibu Canyon. Alan’s other local artwork can be found at Coast Hwy Traders.

Day of the Dead Mural at Coast Hwy Traders

painting cht 2Volunteers prepping the wall

On Sunday November 1st 2015 at 5:15 pm at  Coast Hwy Traders in Encinitas Ca. there will be an unveiling of a new Day of the Dead mural!!! This is the first mural of the Encinitas 101 MainStreet Association’s Alley Activation Program.

We are inviting the public to come directly from the Day of the Dead Celebration held at the Encinitas Community Center to the unveiling. There will be Aztec Dancers to bless the mural, refreshments as well as a costume contests with prizes for those who come dressed in Day of the Dead dress….. including pet costumes!!!.

Bev chose artists Debi Winger and Mayra Navarro from among several artists who applied to paint a Day of the Dead mural on the back  of Coast Hwy Traders as part of the Alley Activation Program organized by the Encinitas 101 MainStreet Association (formerly DEMA). The program is designed to bring more foot traffic to downtown alleys and eliminate the criminal activity that the alleys have attracted for many years. Plans include additional murals, landscaping, lighting, and improvements to the dumpster location, possibly even dumpster sharing and customized enclosures.

Volunteers helped prepared Coast Hwy Traders for the mural. Professional landscape architects Joy Lyndes and Jim Benedetti have donated design services to the project.

After the unveiling, for those of you over 21 years old, come continue the celebration at the Daley Double Saloon with specially-priced drinks.

Here is a sneak peak of the Mural…..it is going to be incredible!!!

Victims of Success!!

I appreciate having blog readers from all over. I know I have one in England( Nick). Encinitas is a small (66,000 people) coastal surf
beach town 25 miles north of San Diego. I moved here in 1988 and opened my store, Coast Hwy Traders, in 1996.

Wow Coast Hwy Traders will be 20 years old next year!

Of course I have seen lots of changes downtown. But in the last year rents have escalated and more changes are a foot. Now we have 6 places for rent!  Chains are breathing at our door step. We are doing our best to find small businesses to join our town.

I worry I am going to be surrounded by coffee shops and restaurants. Popularity is a two edged sword. I wonder how many of you are seeing
change in your towns and what you locals think of all the happenings in Encinitas.

Plastic Bag Ban in Encinitas

Bags at CHT blog

On April 10 2015 Encinitas put in affect a ban on plastic bags. Coast Hwy Traders is now only allowed to use paper bags. We must charge 10 cents for these bags. Beginning October 10 2015, they will fine us $100.00 dollars if we do not charge you.

The purpose of the plastic bag ban is to encourage customers to bring in their own shopping bags. So when shopping in Encinitas, please
remember to bring a bag! You can buy one here at Coast Hwy Traders!. The bag above is only $5.00. Buy enough things and we will gift you one.
